When you take a DNA test, your genetic material is analyzed to identify matches with other individuals who have also taken the test. The test compares the genetic markers from your DNA to those of other individuals in the testing company’s database. If the markers from your DNA are similar to those of someone else, the test identifies this as a potential match. The more markers you share with another person, the closer the genetic relationship is likely to be.
For the average person who takes the test, those matches can be in the range from a few hundred to around 20,000. However if you're a Puerto Rican or a descendant of one, those matches increase dramatically, some even as high as 200,000 matches. So, why is this the case? Why do Puerto Ricans have so many matches.

This video is part 3 of famous people that you probably would have never guessed are part Puerto Rican. This part like the first two parts does not include famous full blooded Puerto Ricans like Jennifer Lopez, Benecio Del Toro, or Mark Anthony. The people on this list are people that you would have probably associated with some other group and never thought they had some Puerto Rican heritage. Also in this part, unlike the first two, I've included people, who besides being part Puerto Rican are also part of another Latino heritage.

When we think of desert or arid land, we don't usually envision a tropical island like Puerto Rico. Now the island doesn't have a desert in the traditional sense of vast, sandy expanses. However, it does have areas classified as dry forests, which are sometimes referred to as "deserts" due to their arid conditions and unique ecosystems. The Bosque Seco de Guánica, or the dry forest of Guanica is an example of a such a place in Puerto Rico. It is considered the best preserved subtropical dry forest and the best example of dry forest in the Caribbean for a reason..Part of that reason is the ability of plants and animals to survive in the forest despite minimal water.

One of the most important parts of Puerto Rican folklore and identity is the Jibaro. For those that don't know, a Jibaro is more or less a Puerto Rican Hillbilly. Mostly of indigenous Taino and Spanish ancestry and also known as the "mountain people" or "country folk,"they emerged in the rural highlands of Puerto Rico in the 18th century, and have been characterized by a distinct way of life, music, and dress since. Historically known for their emphasis on self-sufficiency and simple living, many Jibaros were subsistence farmers who lived off the land and were largely isolated from urban influence.

How did someone born into poverty to a former slave become the most powerful and richest man in Puerto Rico as a pirate hunter during the 1700s.
Despite his humble beginnings, Miguel Enriquez's was able to obtain advanced upbringing and education. Aside from that, his preparedness and ability to seize opportunity were crucial in his rise to the top at a time when Spain was having trouble with foreign pirates and other European colonial powers that were threatening its economy and power in the region. His ability to lessen that threat made him the most influential Puerto Rican on the island for at least 30 years.

As of recent estimates, approximately 5.8 million Puerto Ricans or descendants of Puerto Ricans live in the U.S. states, compared to about 3.1 million residing on the island of Puerto Rico. This means roughly 65% of all Puerto Ricans live in the mainland U.S., while the remaining 35% live on the island. This demographic shift has been driven by economic challenges, better job opportunities, and natural disasters like Hurricane Maria, which has prompted significant migration in the past and in recent years. Today, Puerto Ricans live in every state, including Alaska. However, we're going to count down the top ten states where they have made the most impact.

In late November of 1995 thousands of people attended the funeral of Tono bicicleta. Tono bicicleta or Tony Bicycle, the name given because he never owned a car and got around on an old bike was a legend of sorts in the folklore of Puerto Rico. However, his legendary status did not come as a result of any humane accomplishment.
On the contrary, it came in the mode of outlaws such as Bonnie and Clyde who despite the fact that they were brutal killers, somehow drew fascination from a segment of the population. This segment who view themselves as victims of a corrupt system tend to make heros of those who evade or humiliate such a system. Tono Bicicketa for his part is credited with escaping from prison at least three times and befuddling corrupt authorities who had a hard time keeping up with him for three decades.

While there are several cultural and DNA influences in Puerto Rico, there is no question that the predominant influence comes from Spain. Now that doesn't mean that Puerto Ricans in general are Spaniards but it does mean that much of what is Puerto Rico was heavily influenced by Spain. Overall Spanish influence in Puerto Rico is the dominate influence on the island, culturally and genetically. According to DNA studies, the average Puerto Rican has 65%-70% European DNA and most of that comes from Spain.

The previous inhabitants of Puerto Rico lived on the island at least 1,000 years before the arrival of the Spanish. According to some scholars, the Taino as they were known were Arawak speakers who originated from the center of the Amazon basin, which is more or less where Venezuela and Colombia are today.
It's important to note that the Taino name was given to them by the Spanish. In reality we don't really know what they called themselves. but we do know that they were a subgroup of the Arawak people and they called the island Boriquen, which is where we get Boricua from..Boricua for those that don't know is another name for Puerto Rican..
When the Spanish arrived on the island in the early 1500s, there were approximately 20,000 - 70,000 Taino living on the island.
They lived in agricultural societies ruled by caciques with fixed settlements and a matrilllineal system of kinship and inheritance. Their religion centered on the worship of Zemis, which were sculptural objects which housed the deity or ancestral spirit.
It was thought that the Taino population in Puerto Rico was completely eradicated soon after the arrival of the Spaniards, due to disease, maltreatment and slavery, however several DNA studies have put that myth to rest.
In 2001, Juan Carlos Martinez Cruzado of the University of Puerto Rico analyzed modern Puerto Ricans and found substantial amounts of Native American ancestry in their mitochondrial genones-a subset of DNA that's inherited from mothers. From this study he concluded that the Taino contribution to the current population is considerable, however that study only proved that it was indigenous to the Americas not specifically Puerto Rico.
However in the last few years, Maria Nieves Colon, an anthropologist geneticist at Arizona State University has worked to wrest tiny fragments of DNA from ancient remains from three archeological sites on the island. Along with her colleagues, she acquired around 124 skeletal remains which all dated between A.D 500 and 1300. They searched these remains for genetic fragments and managed to completely decipher the mitochondrial genomes from 45 precontact people and partial nuclear genomes from two of them. Now keep in mind this was a very difficult task considering DNA breaks down quickly and easily in tropical conditions.
The results however confirmed that these indigenous remains in Puerto Rico were strongly connected to Amazonian groups from Venezuela and Colombia and mote than likely originated from that region. They also contain genetic evidence connecting pre-colonial populations with modern ones
The team found that 45 in mitochondrial genomes fell into 29 distinctive clusters. Most of these have never been detected in modern-day people across the Caribbean and may well have disappeared. But three of them did survive: they're still around in the genomes of today's Puerto Ricans and only in Puerto Ricans.
Since then, several more DNA studies have yielded surprising results. Those results showed that at least 61% of Puerto Ricans have Taino ancestry and that ancestry is between 10-20% of their DNA.

Puerto Rico has long been a hotspot for UFO sightings. The island's strategic location in the Caribbean, combined with its military installations and observatories, has fueled speculation about extraterrestrial interest. Over the decades, numerous reports have emerged from residents, pilots, and military personnel, describing unexplained aerial phenomena
One of the most compelling of these reports was the 2013 Aguadilla UFO incident. And the reason it was so compelling was that it was captured on radar and video recordings by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircraft.

When we hear the stories of the initial contacts between the Spanish and the Taino in Puerto Rico or the Caribbean in general for that matter, many automatically assume that the Taino or any Amerindians were completely peaceful people who lived in paradise. And although, there might be some truth to this, it's not completely true. When the Spanish arrived, there were conflicts that existed within the local populations, especially the Taino and Caribs. These conflicts made it easier for the Spain to conquer Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

Among all people, you can expect charlattans, con artists and false prophets. They have existed since the beginning of this world and you will find them on all four corners of the Globe. Puerto Rico is not exempt from this reality. And the most notable case is that of Jose Luis de Jesus Miranda, a native Puerto Rican who founded the Ministerio Creciendo en Gracia (“Growing in Grace”) church and claimed to be the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Granted U.S. citizenship in 1917, many Puerto Ricans migrated to the U.S. mainland, particularly during the mid-20th century, where they interacted and formed relationships with diverse ethnic and racial groups. Military service also brought Puerto Ricans into close contact with Americans from various backgrounds, leading to interracial and interethnic marriages. These relationships and marriages often produced offspring and many of them are famous people that are interwoven in mainstream American culture.
We are going to look at 10 of these famous people and I bet there are at least 2 or 3 on this list that you would have never imagined have Puerto Rican ancestry.
