How to be an activist who creates real change | Carey Theil & Christine Dorchak | TEDxAlexanderP landevideos 1 Views • 18 days ago

Each of us, even the most cynical politician, has a child inside who desperately wants to do something that is genuinely good. We all want to change the world. So we write letters, hold protests, wave our signs, and argue on social media – but nothing gets better. Thus we lose faith in democracy and convince ourselves that lasting change cannot be achieved. After two decades of fighting the multi-billion dollar greyhound gambling industry and winning, Christine Ann Dorchak and Carey Theil - founders of advocacy group GREY2K USA Worldwide - discovered three core lessons about successful activism. And, not only that, they saved the lives of thousands of dogs along the way. Christine Ann Dorchak and Carey Theil are the cofounders of greyhound protection group, GREY2K USA Worldwide. As a nonprofit entity, GREY2K works to end the cruelty of dog racing and fund greyhound rescue on a global basis. Before obtaining her law degree, Christine worked as Research Director for the New England Anti-Vivisection Society. Christine specializes in pari-mutuel law and has drafted laws to successfully prohibit dog racing in several states and countries. A long-distance runner all of her life, she has competed in seven Boston Marathons to date. Carey has been sourced in hundreds of news articles and testified in favor of stronger greyhound protection laws all across the United States. In his free time, Carey volunteers for various non-profit organizations and is a National Master in chess. Christine and Carey are the co-authors of the new book, Brooklyn Goes Home.

This is how one New York nonprofit benefits from Colin Kaepernick’s activism
This is how one New York nonprofit benefits from Colin Kaepernick’s activism landevideos 1 Views • 18 days ago

It’s hard to say exactly how many deep-pocket donors there are like NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, but he’s as good as they come, according to several New York nonprofits that got a slice of his million-dollar pledge.

The player-turned activist ignited a national debate about the intersection of sports and activism after he began sitting – and later kneeling – during pre-game renditions of the national anthem. Some critics said he was just out to promote himself through such high-profile actions.

But Kaepernick has put his activism into action across the country through a pledge to donate $1 million to social justice initiatives big and small. The donations came out of nowhere, nonprofit leaders said – just an email from a Kaepernick associate stating that he wishes to give without that many strings attached, part of his low-key approach to giving.

Kaepernick could not be reached for comment.

The leader of at least one recipient – Coalition for the Homeless – was skeptical at first that it was really Kaepernick until the money transfer arrived in his organization’s coffers. A rough-and-tumble childhood also meant that Kaepernick had a first-hand exposure to many of the issues facing the clients of the nonprofit, which received $25,000 from him last fall.

"He knows the struggles that a lot of the people that we help here at the coalition have been through," Coalition for the Homeless Executive Director Dave Giffen said in a telephone interview. “We often deal with issues that Colin was bringing light to in his campaign.”

Other New York groups that received money include Justice League, Communities United for Police Reform and 100 Suits for 100 Men, which helps keep people out of prison by providing free suits outside courthouses so that criminal defendants can give judges and juries a snazzy first impression.

The final $100,000 installment of the two-year effort did not earmark funds for any New York-based groups, but the “Colin Kaepernick effect” lives on long after funds arrive in a nonprofit’s bank account.

The publicity inspired more than a dozen donations in his honor the week after he donated $33,000 to the Lower East Side Girls Club last year. That money will allow more girls to take part in an initiative promoting community development and civic engagement, and continues to pay dividend past the end-of-year fundraising season, Valerie Polanco, a spokesperson for the organization, said in an email.

He’s a force multiplier when it comes to raising money, according to Polanco.

“People have been donating in his honor as recently as two weeks ago,” she said. “It's the gift that keeps on giving!”

Ep 7: The Risk of Telling the Truth - When Activism Meets the Nonprofit Industrial Complex (Part 1)
Ep 7: The Risk of Telling the Truth - When Activism Meets the Nonprofit Industrial Complex (Part 1) landevideos 1 Views • 18 days ago

In this thought-provoking episode of #FEMPIRE, we dive deep into the current political climate, examining the rapid shifts happening in both Canada and the U.S. and how they're affecting the nonprofit and fundraising sectors. Our guest, Esther Saehyun Lee, shares her candid perspective that, for her, fundraising isn’t just about money—it needs to be rooted in justice and equity.

Esther dives into the real risks and fears many face when speaking out against these systems, especially in industries where power and wealth are concentrated. She challenges the idea that those advocating for justice are fearless, reminding us that true courage lies in acting despite fear. Esther also reflects on a pivotal moment in her career when she decided to call out systemic racism in a nonprofit organization, offering a powerful example of how speaking your truth can be liberating.

We explore the intersection of activism and fundraising, discussing the tension between serving marginalized communities and navigating institutions that often uphold the very systems of oppression that harm them. Esther’s story is a testament to the resilience and courage it takes to challenge the status quo and push for real change.

Tune in for a raw, insightful, and ultimately hopeful exploration of finding courage, demanding accountability, and reimagining the nonprofit sector's role in the fight for a more equitable world.

Rick Griffith: Non-Violence & Activism
Rick Griffith: Non-Violence & Activism landevideos 0 Views • 18 days ago

Artist Rick Griffith is joined by Evan Weissman and Stephen Brackett to discuss non-violence and activism in art and beyond, asking the questions: How do we continue to apply pressure to our government? What is the action that moves the needle? How do you take activism from the digital world and social media to the real world? And what is the real work?

Rick Griffith is a British West-Indian Designer, typographer/letterpress printer, and writer/columnist at print magazine. After immigrating to the U.S. in the late ‘80s, it was his early jobs at Washington D.C. record stores that turned him on to graphic design. It was a (short) freelance career on Madison Avenue which funded his first practice, RGD (Rick Griffith Design), and it is his love of design (and his partner Debra Johnson) which sustains the design practice MATTER, which, over the last two decades, has grown into an ambidextrous design consultancy, print shop, workshop, and retail bookstore.

Evan Weissman is the founder and Civic Artist at Warm Cookies of the Revolution, a Civic Health Club that blends innovative arts and culture with crucial civic issues. Prior to founding Warm Cookies of the Revolution, he spent twelve years as a company member of the collaborative Buntport Theater Company, as playwright, director, designer, and actor. He also teaches courses on the radical foundations of nonviolence at Colorado College

Stephen Brackett has toured the world with his band, Flobots, using music as a platform for engagement and collective empowerment. His time as a philosophy student at Colorado State University nurtured his life-long love affair with the arts, education, and activism. Blending his passions, he co-founded the non-profit Youth on Record in 2008. Youth on Record exists to empower Colorado’s youth to achieve their academic, artistic, and personal best by employing local, professional artists as their educators.

Speed Geek: Supporting Resilient Activism and Organizations in Times of War, with Anna Kuliberda landevideos 1 Views • 18 days ago

Recorded during TechSoup's Future of Work conference, October 26, 2022. https://www.airmeet.com/e/a2f0....9400-24a6-11ed-966c-

Next is a topic that’s been on everyone’s minds throughout the year. Nonprofits in Ukraine are acting as first responders in the war and are under tremendous stress. But usually the last thing nonprofits worry about is taking care of themselves. That’s why TechSoup Europe is building a program that provides quick answers to the challenges of staying resilient. Anna Kuliberda, Senior Advisor for TechSoup Europe shares more in the next demo.

PRESENTER: Anna Kuliberda
Independent coach and consultant, with a "Humans not robots" perspective. I support activists' initiatives and non-profit organizations in management, innovation, and change. In addition to being the founder of The Radical Act of Self-Care, I specialize in program curation for events with meaning in order to combat activists' burnout. I have been working with TechSoup Europe for 10 years supporting organizations in Central and Eastern Europe.
More about me at www.annakuliberda.com.

DEMONSTRATION
When non-profit organizations are suddenly confronted with a war situation, they face a multitude of challenges. Usually, the last thing on the list is supporting yourself, especially if it wasn't a practice in the pre-crisis era. That is why TechSoup Europe is building a program that provides quick answers to real-life challenges of staying resilient for Ukrainian organizations.

'Nonprofit killer' bill: Congress' plan to KILL Palestine activism w/Chip Gibbons &am
'Nonprofit killer' bill: Congress' plan to KILL Palestine activism w/Chip Gibbons &am landevideos 0 Views • 18 days ago

The Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, or HR 9495, has passed a vote in the House. If approved by the Senate, this bill would grant the Treasury Department broad powers to label nonprofit organizations, especially those that have been critical of Israel, as supporters of "terrorism" and strip them of their tax-exempt status without due process. What are the chances that HR 9495 will become law? If it does, will it be used as a weapon to target political enemies and quash political dissent under a second Trump administration, as critics fear? Journalists Chip Gibbons and Noah Hurowitz join the TRNN podcast to give a full breakdown of what this bill could empower the Trump administration to do, and how we can fight back.

Noah Hurowitz is a journalist based in New York City and the author of El Chapo: The Untold Story of the World's Most Infamous Drug Lord. His work has appeared in New York Magazine, Business Insider, Rolling Stone, and many other publications. His latest report at The Intercept is titled "The House just blessed Trump’s authoritarian playbook by passing nonprofit-killer bill." Chip Gibbons is a journalist, researcher, and policy director of the nonprofit advocacy organization Defending Rights and Dissent. He is currently working on a book titled The Imperial Bureau, forthcoming from Verso Books. Based heavily on archival research and documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, it tells the history of FBI political surveillance and explores the role of domestic surveillance in the making of the US national security state.
