In the summer of 2022, the Hammer Museum's academic programs department launched the second year of Art + Activism: A Collaborative Learning Project, a multigenerational artmaking mentorship program. The program brought together eight high school students, four UCLA undergrads, and two UCLA graduate MFA students to explore the intersections of art and activism over the course of six weeks of online and in-person learning. Participants built creative and collaboration skills and deepened their knowledge of a range of artistic and activist practices. They also gained skills and strategies for navigating arts education and career pathways through mentorship cohorts and from guest speakers.
Inspired by Andrea Bowers’s artistic practice, they collaborated on a culminating project that supports the work of local activist organization, Arts For LA. For the project, activists from Arts For LA shared about their arts education advocacy work and taught participants about organizing tactics and Proposition 28, an upcoming ballot measure that would significantly raise funding for arts education in K-12 public schools in California. This inspired the Art + Activism interns to create social media content, posters, a zine, and t-shirts to raise awareness around this ballot measure.

CNBC's David Faber and Leslie Picker discuss Exxon's changing board of directors after activists worked to get shareholders on the board. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO: https://cnb.cx/2NGeIvi
Activist firm Engine No. 1 won at least two board seats at Exxon following a historic battle over the oil giant’s board of directors, signaling investors’ support for greater disclosure from the company as the world shifts away from fossil fuels.
The vote over a third candidate proposed by Engine No. 1 was too close to call as of 3 p.m. on Wall Street.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming the new directors,” Exxon CEO Darren Woods said Wednesday on CNBC’s “Closing Bell.” “I look forward to helping them understand our plans and then hear their insights and perspectives.”
Engine No. 1, which has a 0.02% stake in Exxon, has been targeting the company since December, pushing the it to reconsider its role in a zero-carbon world.
Wednesday’s vote came during Exxon’s annual shareholder meeting, where Woods fielded questions from shareholders ranging from the company’s dividend to its investments in carbon capture technology.
The meeting took place in two parts, with a roughly one-hour recess between the two due to a number of votes still being cast.
The vote follows months of back-and-forth between Engine No. 1 and Exxon. The activist firm nominated four independent director candidates and won support from large pension funds, including CalPERS, calSTRS and the New York State Common Retirement Fund.
On Monday, Exxon said in a filing that over the next 12 months it will seek to add two new directors, “one with energy industry experience and one with climate experience.”
But Engine No. 1 said the changes didn’t go far enough. “What the Board needs are directors with experience in successful and profitable energy industry transformations who can help turn aspirations of addressing the risks of climate change into a long-term business plan, not talking points,” the firm said in a statement Monday.
For its part, Exxon’s management has emphasized the steps it is taking toward solidifying its role in a lower-carbon future, including allocating $3 billion for research around carbon capture and other emissions-cutting technologies.
In March the oil giant added two new directors to its board, including ESG investor Jeff Ubben, who founded Inclusive Capital Partners. Ubben previously headed activist firm ValueAct, which he launched in 2000.
The battle over Exxon’s board comes as the company’s stock has recovered from its coronavirus pandemic lows. The shares are up more than 40% for 2021, and have gained 26% over the last year amid a recovery in oil prices and aggressive cost-cutting strategies by the company. Still, the stock has been cut nearly in half since its all-time high above $100 in January 2014, and last year the company was removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average after nearly a century in the index.
Exxon swung to a profit during the first quarter of 2021 after four straight quarters of losses as the pandemic wreaked havoc on the oil and gas industry.

Activist investments
Activist investment is a form of investment used by some big hedge funds, in which the investment fund uses its right to vote the members of the board of directors in order to shape the company decisions.
Why only large hedge funds do that? That’s because, in order to have enough power to influence the board of directors you have to own a big stake in the company. Something that the average retail investor can’t afford. None the less, many times the hedge fund still has to convince more passive institutional investors like BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street etc.. because they don’t own a majority stake in the company. But if they ally with other relevant investors they can proceed more easily with transformation in the company. This technique started to be very well known in the 80s when Carl Icahn and Thomas Boone Pickens started buying big stakes in publicly traded companies. After amassing a big stake they forced managements to create value for shareholders, so the management either had to do what these hedge fund managers wanted them to do or to pay them a premium in order to convince them to back out of the equity of the company. They were considered corporate raiders rather than activist investors. More recently Carl Icahn had a clash BlackRock Chairman and CEO Larry Fink. Larry Fink accused activist investors of not worrying for the well-being of companies on the long term, but only about the short term gains. This attack was aimed at Icahn himself. He also criticized the way activists come out in public attacking companies. As a matter of fact, activists frequently use media like tv, news outlets etc… to influence the public perception towards a company in order to shift its decisions. New strong criticism came when investor Bill Ackman came out live on CNBC making terrifying predictions about the markets earlier this year because of lockdowns and during this interview the stock market dropped significantly. It later came out that Bill Ackman held shorts in the markets for billions of dollars and that drop increased his profits.
Activist investment has also a bright side. For example when the management is not acting in the best interest of the shareholders, these investors can push for change for example by cutting on expenses, cutting unnecessary bonuses for management etc… Otherwise these investors can report companies that are not working well more in general. For example Bill Ackman understood the risks of Credit Default Swaps on Mortgage backed securities. So he shorted MBIA, an important operator in this field and pushed the government to step in the company to regulate it. By doing so he made it clear for the public that the company wasn’t operating correctly, so that retail investors would stay away from that company. No action was taken by the authorities but he held his shorts until The great crisis came and the company went bust.
We’ve already covered Elliott Management founder Paul Singer so check that out. We’ll soon cover Carl Icahn, Bill Ackman and other activist investors so make sure not to leave without subscribing to the channel.

In this interview, Corinna connects with David Johnson, a professor who teaches Design Thinking courses at Stanford University's D-School (Hasso Plattner Institute of Design) and Negotiation at Stanford School of Law. They discuss his journey from law to design thinking and climate activism.
As he says, we need a billion climate activists -- but we're not going to get them -- so he has crafted a solution to help create the change we need. David proposes a new system by which we can capitalize on the network effect and create a "greenprint" that will turn small groups of well intentioned activists around the world into a force of nature that can create real and lasting change -- with the goal of preserving and protecting our home planet.
About David Johnson:
David Johnson is a lawyer, writer and professor. He teaches Advanced Negotiation at Stanford Law School, and Design Thinking at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford. Across the last 20 years he has also practiced law in Silicon Valley, primarily as General Counsel for tech companies and, most recently, a non-profit foundation. His client list included some of the biggest names in science and technology: Apple, Caliper, Google, McKesson, Sankyo Pharma, and The Computer History Museum.
Last year, during sabbatical in Singapore, he wrote a keynote article for the Singapore Academy of Law, Design for Legal Systems. Now back at Stanford, David is working on a book applying design thinking to climate change activism, working title: Climate Activism by Design. In addition to writing and teaching, David is an avid skier and sailor, and a diligent but decidedly average tennis player.
