Puerto Ricans have a storied tradition of military service in U.S. wars, specifically after 1898 when the island became a U.S. territory following the Spanish-American War. Since then, Puerto Rican soldiers have participated in every major conflict involving the United States, from World War 1 to the present day. But what many don't know is that even before 1898, when Puerto Rico was still a colony of Spain, Puerto Ricans played a small but notable role in the American Civil War (1861–1865)
