Puerto Ricans in general have demonstrated solidarity, advocacy, and practical support for immigrants, both from local leaders and the broader community. And rightly so, as most immigrants have contributed to the island. However, just like the US mainland, Puerto Rico has also faced a barage of illegal/undocumented immigration in the past years. Estimates suggest that Puerto Rico has between 30,000-100,000 undocumented individuals living on the island with the number expected to grow if left unchecked.
Puerto Rico (a territory of the US) is a small island of around 3.3 million people and its residents are US citizens that can travel freely to and from the US mainland. For this reason, the federal government has put the island at the forefront of its fight against Illegal immigration.
