Puerto Rico Hillbilly - El Jibaro
One of the most important parts of Puerto Rican folklore and identity is the Jibaro. For those that don't know, a Jibaro is more or less a Puerto Rican Hillbilly. Mostly of indigenous Taino and Spanish ancestry and also known as the "mountain people" or "country folk,"they emerged in the rural highlands of Puerto Rico in the 18th century, and have been characterized by a distinct way of life, music, and dress since. Historically known for their emphasis on self-sufficiency and simple living, many Jibaros were subsistence farmers who lived off the land and were largely isolated from urban influence.
