History of Puerto Rico: Part 3 (1952-1999)

The history of Puerto Rico from 1952 to 1999 was marked by continued significant political, economic, and social developments. It began with the continuation of the struggle between Nationalists led by Albizu Campos and Commonwealth supporters led by Munoz Marin. The period is marked primarily by the reign of the commonwealth status, implementation of the economic program known as Operation Bootstrap and heavy migration from the Island to the U.S. mainland. It ends with the islanders coming to grip with what status would be best for Puerto Rico, independence, statehood or continued commonwealth.
