Born in 1965 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Wanda Díaz-Merced grew up with a passion for the stars and the mysteries of the universe. Her fascination with astronomy was sparked early, inspired by the night skies of her childhood and a deep curiosity about the cosmos. She pursued her dreams with fervor, earning a degree in Physics from the University of Puerto Rico and then advancing her studies in astronomy. However, Díaz-Merced's journey took a dramatic turn in 1996 when she was diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease that progressively diminished her vision. This challenge, while daunting, did not deter her from her scientific ambitions. Instead, it became a catalyst for her ingenuity.
As her vision declined, Díaz-Merced found innovative ways to adapt her research methods and technology to continue her work in astronomy.
