For decades, Puerto Rico's political status has been a much debated issue. As a U.S. protectorate/colony since 1898, the island's residents are U.S. citizens but lack voting representation in Congress, can't vote in presidential elections, and at the same time have limited self governance. This unique position has left many Puerto Ricans divided over their future: The question remains: should they pursue statehood, independence, or continue as a territory?
