History of African Slavery in Puerto Rico!
Most of the West Africans that would make their way to Puerto Rico would do so through the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. Originally, the Spanish enslaved the Taino in Puerto Rico. However due to the decimation of the majority of Taino population on the island as a result of disease, they came to rely on African slavery to staff their gold mining and fort-building operations on the island. By 1555, over 15,000 Africans were brought to Puerto Rico and that number would increase a couple centuries later during the sugar plantation surge where more than 40,000 would be imported by 1800.
